Ready to say goodbye to summer? We’re not either. But the new fall makeup trends are actually making us excited to up our game. “For fashion and beauty, fall 2017 is all about rocking the ’90s, frosted blue eye shadows, Drew Barrymore’s chic attitude and butterfly clips,” says Rebecca Minkoff, Essie Global Color Designer. Well, maybe. For those of us who rocked that look in real time, a little modification is in order. Here, three trends and how to make them work for you:
Skip au naturel and bright reds in favor of ruby, berry and wine shades that flatter any skin tone and add instant intrigue even if you’re wearing yesterday’s jeans. Tip: We’re not talking vampire here. A slightly softer version will be more flattering to anyone over 21. To try: Oribe’s Ruby Red ($42); Almay’s SmartShade Butter Kiss Lipstick in Berry Medium ($6.99); Revlon’s Super Lustrous in Berry Smoothie ($7.99)
Metallic eyeshadow is going to be everywhere this fall, but if you lived through the ’90s once, chances are you probably have a few, hmm, creases in your lids. To avoid clusters of heavy metal, opt for shadows that offer just a touch of shimmer. To try: Rodial Smokey Eyeshadow Palette ($40); No7 Stay Perfect Eye Shadow Trios ($9.99); Elizabeth Arden Eyes Wide Open Trios with mica-based pearls for glimmer, not glint ($21)
Nails are the place to have some fun; go for all-out glitz one day, tone it down for a sophisticated look the next. To try: Essie’s Dressed to the Nineties ($9.99) is a deep purple with a blue-green shimmer. For a subtler option, Butter London’s Glaze Nail Lacquer ($10) comes in six shades of iridescent colors (we love the Warm Champagne Shimmer).
