Once spring is in the air, it’s definitely denim jacket season. Like you, I’m a die-hard fan of the jean jacket, finding it is one of the most versatile pieces I own. I’ll throw it over a white T-shirt on the weekends, but I’ll also wear it with a black dress and strappy sandals for a shabby-chic vibe.

Of course, the iconic denim jacket has been a fashion statement for a long time, but I was personally brought into the fold in the 1980s when Madonna started tearing up the stage in her layers, lace and bangles — motivating me to immediately buy my first jean jacket and start teasing my permed hair.

The denim jacket craze is sure to endure, so best to adopt the adage: “When in doubt, wear a denim jacket.” We asked two experts who spend their days and nights thinking about all-things-fashion to give us a peek into exciting denim designs to consider. Here’s what they want you to hear about.

Janelle Jacket by L’AGENCE

Founder of ALH Style, personal stylist Ali Hellmuth says this jacket is her first recommendation to clients. “My favorite features of this slim-fit jacket,” she says, “include the seam placement (the seams practically give you a waist), the edgy unfinished hem and the multiple color and wash options!” Hellmuth calls this the ultimate classic denim jacket. ($345)

Color Block Patch Pocket Denim Jacket by Tractr Jeans

Channeling vintage vibes, this jacket features oversize sleeves and cropped body — and Camille Wright of Style Consortium loves it: “I’m obsessed with this patchwork cropped Tractr Blu jean jacket!” It works for a variety of body types and is your wardrobe’s answer for a transition piece into the spring season, she says. ($92)

Oversized Jacket Karma by Ksubi

Hellmuth offers a secret pro-tip, so listen up: Instead of buying a handful of jackets in various washes such as dark wash, light wash and white, aim for two pieces with “seasonless” washes, making sure they are different fits and styles. The Karma, she says, is one such perfect anchor piece: “It’s not overly oversized and the wash is perfection.” Offering more room for styling, the jacket allows you to cinch the waist, wear it boxy, roll up the sleeves for a ’90s vibe, or cape it over an ensemble of either sweater and boots or slip dress with sandals. ($215)

Denim Destructed Duster by Boom Boom Jeans

Be warned: This long, black denim jacket makes an entrance. “It’s such a dramatic piece,” says fashion stylist Wright. She recommends thinking about it as a topper for a jumpsuit, dress or even over shorts. Whichever way you choose, pair it with an air of confidence so you can walk the streets like a boss. ($40)

Original Trucker Jacket by Levi’s

If you’re sleuthing for the perfect, well-rounded jean jacket, Hellmuth says to look no further than the tried-and-true Levi’s Trucker Jacket. It enjoys a huge fan base because of its classic style and price point. Her personal recommendation is to snag the Soft As Butter-Medium Wash option because it is neither too light nor too dark. Your new BFF, this jacket can go anywhere and will be around for a long time because of the brand’s renowned durability. “Keep in mind a denim jacket should be an investment piece because it gets worn a ton, and you’ll want it to last and look great!” she says. ($98)
