Don’t Let Summer Slip By — Consider These 'Best Of' Destinations

There’s something for everyone this summer!

As the end of summer nears, why not plan now for a trip that will extend the season longer? Here’s food for thought to enjoy the best of nature, city life, food and entertainment, and beach life.

Be One With Nature in Anchorage, Alaska

If you want to be fully immersed in nature, Anchorage, Alaska, is the place to be. Pick up your car rental in Anchorage, grab a bite of local grub downtown (like king crab or reindeer sausage), then drive to explore Denali National Park. You’re in for some incredible scenery, including North America’s tallest peak. From there, head south to Seward for a breathtaking drive and keep an eye out for tons of wildlife along the way, like moose, black bears, and beluga whales.

Summer and early fall are both excellent times to visit Alaska, with temperatures in the cool-but-comfortable range. In the summer, the sun doesn’t set until 11 p.m., so the activities don’t have to end when dinnertime hits. Experience the beautiful backdrop of snowy mountain peaks and glaciers in the fall. Traveling in this season also likely means more discounts on accommodations and tours.

Get Into the Hustle and Bustle of New York City

NYC is called the city that never sleeps for a reason. Start your day with bagels and lox at a bustling diner. Check out The Met or Guggenheim Museum. Wander the shops along NYC’s iconic Fifth Avenue. Try one of the many prix fixe dining options before a Broadway show. Next – enjoy a nightcap or grab a slice of famous New York pizza as you take in the bright lights of Times Square.

Expand your horizons and discover the many gems outside the city. Explore charming seaside towns on Long Island – and don’t forget to stop in The Hamptons. Or, drive up along the Hudson River for fresh air and fun through the picturesque Hudson Valley region. Then venture up to the Finger Lakes region, with renowned vineyards, festivals for every season, and winding country roads.

Wine and Dine in New Orleans

For a lively vacation destination with endless options for delicious creole and cajun food, plus the best in live entertainment, consider New Orleans.

You’ll want to start off in the French Quarter, New Orleans’ most famous and historic neighborhood, full of cobblestone streets and Spanish colonial architecture. First stop –historic Café Du Monde for hot, fresh beignets and a café au lait. Learn the lay of the land (and river) while you relax aboard a steamboat or meander the streets in a horse-drawn carriage. Later, wander Frenchmen Street and pop into the many jazz clubs in the area for some of the fabulous live music NOLA is known for.

After experiencing the vibrant city life of New Orleans, take a short hour drive up to Baton Rouge, the capital city of Louisiana. Discover both the new and old state capitol buildings, the USS Kidd Veterans Museum, and Louisiana State University!

Fun in the Sun in California

Want more of a relaxing vibe for your summer vacation? Pack up the car with some towels, a cooler filled with refreshing snacks and drinks, and your favorite book. Then head to the beautiful beaches of Southern California. For a family-friendly beach day, check out La Jolla and enjoy its calm waters and long shorelines. Want a little more adventure? Try kayaking or snorkeling at La Jolla Shores, or head to Malibu and catch a wave at Surfrider Beach. For spectacular scenery, make your way to Monterey Peninsula and drive along Ocean View Boulevard or the legendary 17-Mile Drive. Fort Ord Dunes State Park offers sky-high dunes with fantastic views of Monterey Bay.

A summer getaway requires renting a reliable vehicle. Here are some things to consider when renting your car:

  • Get the right model. From compact to SUV, each rental has its benefits. Consider where you’re driving – in the city or on rugged terrain? How much luggage or extras will you need to bring along? How many passengers? Choose a vehicle that meets your needs.
  • Ask about safety options. Protect yourself, the car, and your peace of mind with liability insurance.
