How To Transition To Gray Hair Gracefully

Going gray never looked so good!

You thought you were ready to give free rein to those gray hairs. But a few months into the process, you’re having second thoughts. Before you go back to your old coloring ways, there are plenty of big-deal benefits to being your authentic, silvery self. Think – a life free from monthly (or even weekly) trips to the salon, thousands of dollars saved every year, and healthier hair! Hang in there and check out these tips that’ll get you through that halfway panic point so you can feel – and look – your natural best.

1. Step away from the hair dye. Bleach and chemical dyes cause strands to break down and dry out. The longer you let your gray hair grow in, the more it’ll return to its natural, revitalized state.

2. Cut your hair short. As you grow out old dye jobs, your roots and upper strands will look healthier (and grayer) than your tips. So, for those with shorter hair, the transition to gray can be a lot faster than for those with longer hair. You can always speed the process along by cutting your hair (and those dyed ends) short. If you’re ready for a real change, consider a pixie cut!

3. Don’t be afraid to accessorize. One of the trickiest parts of making the switch to gray hair can be the in-between period where it looks like you missed a hair appointment. Hair accessories can be a fun way to get through that awkward stage. Try out some colorful or patterned headbands, hair clips, or hats. Or experiment with updos or braids to draw attention away from the line between your grays and the dyed hair.

4. Give hair a bleach-free boost. Gray hair tends to be dry, wiry, coarse, or frizzy, so moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in styling oils are essential. You’ll also want to use superior products to help make the transition easier during any phase of your journey. Go Gray® offers several products, like their Revitalizing Treatment, Clarifying Duo, and Purple Toning Duo and Masque, to help with everything from lightening tough dyes and softening the color of hair as it grows out, to further removing dye and restoring your natural hair’s look and feel. Plus, treatments are bleach-free to keep hair at its best.

You’re almost gray and looking gorgeous. For those moments when you have cold feet, remember a few important things: Returning to dye will undo all the hard work you’ve already put in to get your hair on a natural, healthy track. Instead, try a bold, new haircut, treat yourself to some chic accessories, or test drive a different way of styling your locks. When you reach the finish line and are completely gray, it’s going to be amazing. Along the way, you can feel confident knowing you’re treating your hair better – and looking great while doing it.
