The Best Cruises For Those On A Budget

Enjoy a champagne experience on little money.

Courtesy Carnival Cruise

Cruising is something I have come to cherish —  I love being surrounded by the ocean, hearing the slap of the waves against the ship and knowing that once I step on board, everything has already been paid for. It is one of life’s greatest luxuries and one of my life goals is to always have a cruise booked at any given moment, which is a hefty and expensive goal, I know! But I have good news, Girlfriends. Believe it or not, some of the best cruises come with all the luxury, fun and relaxation you might imagine, minus the ridiculous price tag. Yes, there are cruise lines that offer a champagne experience on a soda budget. Here are three cruise lines that offer a champagne experience on a soda budget:

Margaritaville at SeaT

This Jimmy Buffett-themed cruise line offers everything you would expect from an all-inclusive trip: buffet and sit-down dining, dance clubs, on-board entertainment (stand-up comedy, theater, trivia and karaoke), a spa, a casino and even a tattoo artist on board so you can leave “with nothing to show but this brand new tattoo.” They currently have two active vessels, Paradise and Islander, and will be introducing their newest addition to the fleet, Beachcomber, in 2027. While the current ships are older, the décor is modern, with an island theme, a life-sized flip-flop in the atrium, an indoor “front porch swing” and live recordings of Jimmy Buffett playing on the big screen on the pool deck. Margaritas are, of course, their specialty and they even offer a hunt for that famous “lost shaker of salt.”

What this cruise line lacks in bells and whistles, it makes up for with camaraderie and tradition. They offer a Heroes Sail Free Program for teachers, first responders and military personnel. One of their most celebrated traditions is the very patriotic Hero’s Salute, where members of the military are introduced in the atrium and honored with applause and unending gratitude for their service — be warned, it’s a bit of a tear-jerker.

Set sail with fellow Parrot Heads, enjoy cheeseburgers (in paradise), celebrate a staff talent show and dare to “waste away in Margaritaville.” Cruises embark from various Florida ports to a variety of Caribbean islands. They offer two- to seven-night cruises and prices begin at $199 per person. They also frequently offer deals where third and fourth guests sail for free, so check their website for special offers. With only 1,600 to 2,500 passengers on board and hospitality galore, if you cruise with Margaritaville at Sea, you’ll likely disembark feeling that you gained not only a tan but a new family as well.

Carnival Cruise Line

In the world of cruisers, Carnival is known for its slightly rowdy, high-energy party vibes. Their first ship, Mardi Gras, debuted in 1972 with the tagline “The Fun Ship,” as an alternative to the more formal cruise lines operating at that time. The fleet has changed over the years, but the fun sure hasn’t. Carnival now operates more than 25 ships with ports all over the United States and in Italy, Spain, Argentina and Australia. They have their own private island, Celebration Key, in the Bahamas, which makes for a welcoming, secluded place to spend a port day. And they are known for being the first cruise line to offer a roller coaster at sea. For the foodies, they are home to the iconic Guy’s Burger Joint (yes, the famous Guy Fieri). It’s a great option for those who want to skip the formal nights and relax in flip-flops and tank tops while dancing the night away on the top deck.

Itineraries include two- to 23-night voyages, starting at $194 per person. They also offer monthly payment plans, which is super convenient for those who live paycheck to paycheck. Carnival values their loyal customers, offering rewards through their VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) program. If you love The Wobble, The Cha Cha Slide and a high-energy crowd, then this may be the best fit for you. It’s likely not the best fit for the introverted reader who can’t stand the sound of loud music.

MSC Cruises

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) was once known as a budget cruise line, but with the introduction of its newest ship, MSC World America, the brand seems to be creating a new and improved image. The prices remain reasonable and the experience on board any MSC ship blends luxury with affordability. Guests frequently rave about the entertainment on board. From Broadway-inspired musicals to tribute nights (Dirty Dancing or ABBA, anyone?) and a schedule that offers fun for the whole family from sunup until well past sundown, you are sure to get a whole lot of bang for every buck.

Prices range from $149 per person for a two-night cruise to $1,000-plus per person for 14-night cruises. If you’re looking to spend less, book an interior cabin and sign up to receive notice of their best deals right in your inbox. Kids sail for free on select cruises and they typically have great deals for last-minute sailings.

Each of these cruise lines includes the basics (stateroom, main dining rooms and select entertainment) in their standard fare. Beware of the add-ons (Wi-Fi, alcoholic beverages and drink passages and specialty dining) prior to booking. And remember, all cruise lines expect guests to pay a flat-rate gratuity when on board. Be sure to read all of the fine print before you swipe that Visa.

The bottom line? Cruising can feel luxurious even on a tight budget. If you are willing to set sail with an attitude of gratitude, a few (hundred) extra bucks in your pocket and a readiness to have fun, you can’t go wrong with these cruise lines. So pack your flip-flops, grab your loved ones and find the voyage that is right for you. Be warned, though, cruising can become addictive — you, too, may end up with the goal of always having your next cruise booked!
