Want A Change Of Scenery?

3 great trips to take now.

Temperatures are dropping, the air is crisp, and fallen leaves are crackling beneath our feet. It’s an invigorating time of year, a changing season that fuels the desire to hit the road and experience a new adventure. Read on for three ways to satisfy that urge.

Outdoor Adventure
Imagine this: leaf peeping as you drive along scenic byways, then stopping for a hike or bike ride, and, after an hour or two, savoring the picnic lunch you’ve picked up at a local farmers market. What’s known as forest bathing – immersing yourself in nature – is good for body and soul. And with the summer crowds gone, fall is the perfect time to visit a national or state park.

Do your outdoor passions include golfing, kayaking, or fishing? Or are you up for trying something new, like bouldering or birding? You can find these activities and more at a park just a few hours away from home. Or, if you’ve got time, now is the perfect season to travel to a part of the country you’ve never been before. Maybe that’s visiting the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, Acadia National Park in Maine, Yosemite National Park in California, or Guadalupe Mountains National Park in West Texas. Scores of stunning destinations await.

A Road Trip With Friends
You and your friends share a passion for wine or antique shopping, fine dining or roadside taco stands, history or great art museums. You’ve exhausted the local options for these interests, so why not go farther afield? Perhaps you want to explore the vineyards of Paso Robles, California, the shops of Charleston, South Carolina, or Portsmouth, New Hampshire, or the exploding restaurant scene in Nashville, Tennessee, or Austin, Texas. Pick a theme, choose the dates, plan an itinerary – with room for spontaneity – and enjoy your getaway!

Remote Work or “Bleisure”
With the flexibility of remote work, immersing yourself in someplace new doesn’t need to wait until vacation time. Try a house swap, an extended-stay hotel, or a short-term rental, and spend a month or so in new surroundings. Walk unfamiliar streets, have breakfast in a new café, and check out the local street fairs and markets. It can all be so exhilarating.

If you live in a sprawling metropolis, consider a compact, walkable city. Trade the coast for the mountains, the North for the South, the suburbs for an artsy boho community. Can’t stay away from home for weeks at a time? Then join the ranks of so-called bleisure travelers who combine business trips with leisure travel. Tag on a few days before or after your next business trip or conference. Rent a car and do some sightseeing, and simply live like a local in a new city.
