Our advice for looking pulled together when you’re feeling anything but. Bonus: You don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style.
BOY MEETS GIRL
Boyfriend jeans + pretty top
It may seem counterintuitive to reach for a pair of baggy jeans when you want to look polished, but this outfit is all about balance. Boyfriend jeans are amazing with a feminine top, and velvet, lace or dark floral details are especially on-trend for fall. Add heels and ladylike jewelry, as the pretty pieces soften the denim’s tomboy edge. Another plus: The jeans are roomy enough that you can order that double stack of pancakes without worrying about muffin top. Perfect for: Brunch with the In-laws
Dress + sneakers
Pairing dresses with sneakers used to be a faux pas of the Melanie Griffith circa Working Girl variety, but now the look is that rare combination of fashionable and comfortable. To update last summer’s sundress-and-Stan Smiths uniform for fall, choose a weightier fabric in a subdued color and top with a leather jacket or trench. Add a scarf for a pop of color or texture to further enhance the look. As for the shoes? Anything from sleek Keds to bulky New Balances, to glittery Converses, to yes, the ubiquitous Stan Smiths can work, depending on the look you’re after. Just remember to skip the socks (or wear a no-show version) so you don’t look like an ’80s throwback. Perfect for: Saturday shopping marathon
Sleek sweatpants + jacket
Is there any woman alive who is not thankful for the athleisure trend? Where joggers, tanks and trainers are not only acceptable, but encouraged? To make the look more sophisticated than sloppy, leave the yoga pants and hoodies at the gym, limit yourself to one or two sporty pieces, and keep the rest of the outfit polished. Try topping slim sweatpants with a suede moto jacket, leather shoulder bag and cool-girl sneaks. The rich textures of the jacket and bag elevate the look and are a chic contrast to the relaxed pants. Perfect for: Casual Fridays
